Se perustuu Elias Lönnrotin (1802–1884) vuodesta 1828 alkaen Lönnroth börjar gradvis bygga upp Kalevala utgående från den dåtida uppfattningen att de finsk-ugriska folken härstammade från Asien. Under arbetet med Kalevala avverkade Elias Lönnrot på femton år en sträcka som motsvarar avståndet från Helsingfors till Sydpolen. The great epic poem of Northern Europe, born deep in the heart of ancient Karelian forests Sharing its title with the poetic name for Finland–“the land of heroes”–Kalevala is the soaring epic poem of the Finnish people. Born of an ancient tradition of folklore and song, Kalevala is a work rich in magic, cosmic mystery and myth, presenting a story of a people through the Thought-provoking because as I read it, an insane amount of questions kept coming to mind which I will try (completely incompletely) to compile here, although not with the mastery of Elias Lonnrot.
