Kalevala utkom i sin nuvarande form för 160 år sedan. Elias Lönnrot sammanställde Kalevala främst utifrån folkdiktningen i Karelen eftersom 

Kalevala on Suomen ja Karjalan tasavallan kansalliseepos. Se perustuu Elias Lönnrotin (1802–1884) vuodesta 1828 alkaen  Lönnroth börjar gradvis bygga upp Kalevala utgående från den dåtida uppfattningen att de finsk-ugriska folken härstammade från Asien. Under arbetet med Kalevala avverkade Elias Lönnrot på femton år en sträcka som motsvarar avståndet från Helsingfors till Sydpolen. På stensockeln finns en dold bild av kalevala-vetaren Antero Vipunen. Vipunens ansikte är avbildat uppochner under Väinämöinen.

The lyrical passages and poetic images, wry humor, tall-tale extravagance, and homely realism of the Kalevala come through with great effectiveness. Kalevala reference is made to the "cleansing and healing virtues of the vapors of the heated bathroom." The skull of the Finn belongs to the brachycephalic (short-headed) class of Retzius.

His color is swarthy, and his eyes are gray. Lonnrot's vision strongly influenced other scholars and, both in Finland and abroad, they began to see the Kalevala as a valid source for investigating the history of Finnish culture. The Kalevala soon spread the fame of Finnish people around the civilized world so that everyone could see that there, in the Far North, a small nation exists in the backwoods that has an epic history unlike any Elias Lönnrot was a Finnish philologist and collector of traditional Finnish oral poetry.

The great epic poem of Northern Europe, born deep in the heart of ancient Karelian forests Sharing its title with the poetic name for Finland–“the land of heroes”–Kalevala is the soaring epic poem of the Finnish people. Born of an ancient tradition of folklore and song, Kalevala is a work rich in magic, cosmic mystery and myth, presenting a story of a people through the Thought-provoking because as I read it, an insane amount of questions kept coming to mind which I will try (completely incompletely) to compile here, although not with the mastery of Elias Lonnrot.
