It was raised in the late 1970s by Aaron Antonovsky, a medical sociologist interested in stress theory who had undertaken a traditional epidemiological study on the effects of menopause on women who had undergone extremely stressful life events, some of them had survived the Holocaust. A concept developed by Aaron Antonovsky (1923-1994) for where the medical focus should lie: on how people become well, not on why they are sick. It is a classic study of what allows people to be resilient in the face of stress, a concept coined "salutogenesis" by Antonovsky. Using clinical practice and qualitative research methods, Antonovsky shows in fact how people can overcome serious challenges. Aaron Antonovsky (19 December 1923 – 7 July 1994) was an Israeli American sociologist and academician whose work concerned the relationship between stress, health and well-being (salutogenesis). In 1972, he helped establish the medical school at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, and held the Kunin-Lunenfeld Chair in Medical Sociology.
