What is an Auxiliary Power Unit used for? Air is taken from an inlet (normally under the aircraft) and this is cooled and conditioned in the air conditioning system

The unit provides compressed air for air conditioning while the airplane is on the ground and at limited altitude in flight. The unit also provides electrical power for use on the ground or in flight. Under normal circumstances, APU’s are used by flight crews to aid in engine starting and to provide air conditioning for passenger (and crew!) comfort on the ground. The Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) is a small jet engine housed in the tail of the aircraft used to provide a source of electricity to power the aircraft on the ground when the engines are switched off and as a source of air in order to start the engines. An APU can also provide backup electrical power.

I can only think failures or bad installation are causing this. Also, is the battery and standby power on? The main difference is the mobility – an APU is installed in an aircraft while a GPU is mobile can be used on different aircrafts. Another notable difference is they are only used to energize depending on the aircraft design – i.e.

During on-ground operation, it provides bleed air for cabin conditioning from a low spool-driven load compressor, main engine start capability, and electrical power from two gearbox-mounted, 120kVA generators. 2019-03-11 · The APU is a turbine engine that sits in the tail of the aircraft. It provides no thrust. Like any jet engine, it takes in air, compresses it, adds a fuel mixture and ignites it.

The airborne auxiliary power is obtained from a gas turbine auxiliary power unit (APU). The APU is a compact, self-contained unit that provides compressed air for engine starting on the ground. The unit provides compressed air for air conditioning while the airplane is on the ground and at limited altitude in flight. Crews normally run the APU before flight for electrical power, air conditioning and engine start. After landing, the APU is started so engines can be shut down as soon as the aircraft arrives at the gate.

This is a small turbine engine, essentially the same design and operation as the main aircraft engines but on a smaller scale. If you power down the default 737-800 completely, and use fix all failures, you can power it back up and get the APU going again, but it only works for me if the plane is powered down.
